Funkacillin Funkacillin will be puttin' "the stank on it" and bringing the remedy for your funk deficiency! Originally comprised of a group of five Mendocino County musicians who wanted to represent the edgier side of funk, they have recently added multi-percussionist Phil Montalvo from Berkeley to the band, lending his intricate Afro-Cuban rhythms to the soulful and funky grooves the band has become known for. James Brown once said, "The one thing that can solve most of our problems is dancing", and Funkacillin aim to put your troubles on the back burner with a mix of originals and "old school" funk, rock and soul by heavy hitters including The Isley Brothers, Curtis Mayfield, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin and Cold Blood, as well as a few slightly more obscure artists such as Little Beaver, Johnny "Guitar" Watson and Deee-lite, that will have you flashin' back to the days of paisley prints and platform shoes, and get your booty shakin'!

Funkacillin features Lex Krauss (guitar) of Mendozone and formerly Rootstock, Cherie Sheraque (vocals) formerly of Groove Approved and currently of Samba Jamba, Jim Dooley (trumpet and keyboard) of all of the above along with Pura Vida and Los Piratas, Blair Rowland (drums) formerly of Tubesteak Jones and currently with Dumbstruck Genius, Nick Ford (bass) formerly of GDX, and our newest member from the Bay Area, Phil Montalvo (percussion) of Samba Jamba and Unidad.

Funkacillin has performed at noted festivals and events including Ukiah Sundays in the Park Concert Series, Pints in The Plaza, Boonville Beer Festival, Dance For Freedom Music Festival, Long Valley Smoke Out, Mendo-Summer Bash, Laytonville Art Walk, Willits Kinetic Carnivale, and were the featured act at the 2012 Rising Stars Benefit Event.

"NO WAY HOME , cuts cleanly and crisply through the genre clutter with a groove that slices directly to the heart with honest power. Like a sharp needle, it pierces deeply, making it impossible to ignore. This is music with teeth, heart, soul and big brass balls."

David Namerow-Downingtown Master Percussionist

We loved you guys! Thanks again for the great grooves.
You can always count on either one of us or both to start a dance floor.

LEX KRAUSS was born in Santa Rosa California and has been performing musically in one form or another since he was 4 years old, owing his musical talents to not only his wonderful and musical parents, but also to several gifted teachers who touched his life. Lex has been recording his own multi-track music since 1983, and is also a founding member of the Nor-Cal World Reggae Fusion Band called ROOTSTOCK, and the trio project known as MENDOZONE.

CHERIE SHERAQUE grew up in San Francisco where she first discovered her love for funk. With a musical family as well, her father is a classical-flamenco guitarist and performer and her mother loved to sing, albeit not on stage. Cherie has been educated in several genres of music both through experience and academically. She was the lead vocalist for the now defunct Motown/Blues band Groove Approved, sang back-ups and leads for Avant garde Rock group 3B Infinity opening up for Gregg Allman, and is currently also the lead vocalist for Latin Dance band SAMBA JAMBA, singing in Portuguese, Spanish and English.
Her love of Latin music started early in life, being influenced by her father who would bring home castanets and various other instruments as a child and moving to Spain while he served in the Air Force. Later in life, she gained a new appreciation from the late Master Percussionist for Pura Vida, Amunka Davila, who encouraged her to sing Brazilian music for the first time during a performance with his capoeira group. She has also performed with Latin Classical Pianist Elena Casanova, along with Will Seigel, Steve Baird and other well known local musicians in the group Tangojazzmania. Singing everything from Opera, Jazz, Rock, Blues, Latin and Funk, Cherie has a love for music that consumes most of her waking moments, including while at work at Kwine 94.5 FM and booking local venues such as The Shanachie Pub in Willits and Garcia River Casino in Point Arena.

BLAIR ROWLAND-MULLEN was born in Willits in 1981. His parents were music lovers and in late 80's at a jam session, 8 year old Blair discovered his abilities on the conga drum. A few months later he started taking lessons on the snare drum and by age 10 was playing a full drum set. After several years of playing in the school band and taking lessons from local legend Dave Gould, Blair developed his rhythm and technique and became interested in a wide range of music styles.
At 17 he was playing with some of Willits' most talented musicians and helped re-form the band TUBESTEAK JONES which became a local sensation through the late 90's and up to 2001. They played shows from Santa Cruz to Oregon performing at clubs, parties and festivals such as the Hog Farm and Reggae on the River. Tubesteak Jones transformed into RHYME RELATED after 2001 where Blair converted his rhythmic energy
into hip-hop vocals while playing percussion under the stage name Blair Blaze. This opened the gates for more hip hop projects such as OUTLAWS OF ILLWITS. Over the past ten years Blair has played with many different bands such as the Charlie Valley Band, Blue Voodoo, Random Sandwich and most recently DUMB STRUCK GENIUS. No matter what the band or the style Blair will be there to Blaze it.

JIM DOOLEY performs all over Mendocino County and beyond with groups including PURA VIDA, ROOTSTOCK, LOS PIRATAS, SAMBA JAMBA and PONCHE, Jim wows audiences with his incredible range, liquid tone and crisp rhythms. He started playing at age 12, has since traveled all over Latin America to Cuba, Guatemala and Mexico with trumpet in hand, and has been lead trumpet player in several bands over the years from Jazz to rock, Latin to Hip Hop. You name it, he can play it!

NICK FORD is a bassist born in Ukiah, Ca. who began playing music professionally while living in Ft. Bragg at the age of 16. After graduating, he moved to Las Vegas where he played in a variety of bands including, but not limited to, Juicy Miss Lucy, Smooth, Pink & Nasty, The Source, September Rocks and more notably...Shotface. Since his return to Mendocino County he has played in a variety of different bands including The Mark Weston Band, Rukkus, GDX, Hookah Stew and is currently the bassist for Funkacillin!

PHIL MONTALVO is a sought after Latin percussionist who has performed with numerous Bay Area bands, and local group Samba Jamba with Cherie and Jim, which is how he became a part of Funkacillin. His ability to play a multitude of percussive instruments including congas, bongos, timbales, guiro, maracas, tambourine and yes even cowbell... with the right emphasis and technique, have made him an integral part of Funkacillin's rhythm section!
